Why Global Support for Myanmar Matters Now More Than Ever: Earthquake 2025
by Freedom World Team on Jun 3, 2025 10:12:39 PM

When Myanmar shook in early 2025, the destruction was immediate — homes crumbled, roads split, families fled to open fields. But beyond the images of rubble lies a deeper crisis: one of human endurance, silent suffering, and the urgent need for global solidarity.
This earthquake isn’t just Myanmar’s burden — it’s a call for all of us to show up.
A Land of Diversity and Deep Roots
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a Southeast Asian nation bordered by India, China, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Laos. Home to over 135 ethnic groups, Myanmar is a land of cultural richness, from the ancient temples of Bagan to the floating gardens of Inle Lake. Its people have endured centuries of conflict and hardship, and time and again, they rebuild — often quietly, and with little outside help.
But their resilience doesn’t make them immune. Sitting on a major fault line, Myanmar has faced major quakes in 1930, 1975, 2016 — and now, 2025. And with each disaster, it’s often rural communities that are hardest hit and slowest to recover.

A Region Prone to Natural Disasters
Myanmar’s location also makes it vulnerable. Sitting along major fault lines, the country has experienced several significant earthquakes in the past. The 1930 Bago quake, the 1975 tremor near Bagan, and the 2016 disaster that damaged historic temples are only a few examples.
This most recent earthquake in 2025 has once again laid bare the vulnerabilities of both infrastructure and institutions. Rural areas, in particular, are often left isolated, with roads damaged and communication lines down. Immediate relief is challenging — and long-term recovery even more so.
But what stands out is not just the scale of destruction — it’s the quiet dignity with which people endure and begin, once again, to rebuild.

Why This Moment Matters
Myanmar doesn’t need pity. It needs partnership. Here’s how we can show up meaningfully:
- Support trusted local organizations
Groups like Baan Unrak, Whispering Seed, and Bangkok Community Help Foundation (BCHF) are already on the ground. They’re providing food, shelter, and trauma support — not as outsiders, but as neighbors and community members. - Keep the spotlight on
The media may move on, but your voice matters. Sharing stories, reposting updates, or talking about Myanmar helps keep the crisis visible — and visibility drives action. - Think beyond the emergency
Rebuilding takes more than aid. It takes investment in long-term solutions — housing, education, livelihoods. Every dollar toward these efforts gives a family a real chance to thrive again. - Listen and respect
Local communities know what they need. Let’s support solutions that are culturally grounded and community-led.
