How Earthquakes Impact Communities: The Human Aftermath in Myanmar’s 2025 Quake
by Freedom World Team on May 29, 2025 4:55:26 PM

When Myanmar was rocked by a powerful earthquake in early 2025, the destruction was immediate and visible: buildings razed, roads split, families torn from their homes. Yet beyond these visible scars lies a deeper and more enduring impact-one that unfolds in silence, long after the dust has settled.
The true cost of an earthquake isn’t just the damage it inflicts, but the lives it disrupts. As weeks have turned into months, communities across Myanmar are still struggling to regain a sense of normalcy, stability, and dignity.
Myanmar and Earthquakes: A History of Shaken Ground
Situated along the complex tectonic boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates, Myanmar is highly susceptible to seismic activity. Over the last century, major earthquakes have struck with alarming regularity in Bago (1930), Sagaing (1956), and most recently in 2016, when a 6.8 magnitude tremor impacted ancient temples in Bagan and communities across central Myanmar.
While these disasters often fade from international headlines quickly, their long-term effects linger in affected communities for years, especially in a country where infrastructure and social support systems are still evolving.

The Invisible Crisis: Long-Term Impact on Communities
Earthquakes do more than destroy structures, they unravel lives. In rural and urban areas alike, the ripple effects are profound and deeply personal:
Earthquakes don’t just damage buildings—they dismantle entire ways of life. Across rural and urban Myanmar, communities face compounding challenges:
-
Displacement: Many are living in unsafe shelters as the rainy season approaches.
-
Food and Water Insecurity: Crops and supply lines have been disrupted.
-
Lost Livelihoods: Informal economies like food stalls and local markets have vanished overnight.
-
Emotional Toll: Anxiety and trauma, especially in children, remain largely unaddressed.
And yet, amid all this, local resilience is shining through.
Local and Cross-Border Solutions: Stories of Resilience
Three organizations are leading the way in building back not just infrastructure, but hope.
In eastern Myanmar, Baan Unrak has activated a strong network of grassroots partners to address urgent needs with long-term vision.
-
Green Island School has supported over 3,000 families with food and essentials and is now focusing on safe housing and sanitation.
-
Heaven Grace Ministry has delivered relief to over 500 families, guided by deep spiritual compassion and community trust.
-
Whispering Seed is rebuilding floating shelters on Inle Lake, honoring traditional ways of life while protecting families from displacement.

Across the border in Thailand, Bangkok Community Help Foundation’s (BCHF) model preserves dignity—meals are distributed through refugee representatives, ensuring agency and respect even in crisis.
And in Bangkok’s city center, The Waystation is shifting from emergency relief to long-term empowerment. Its street food training program—paused during the quake—is being revived, helping people rebuild not just income, but self-confidence.
